Both of these websites cover internet protection one at home the other at a school library. Parents care enough to make sure that their children are safe wherever they are on the internet. And apparently so do librarians. The internet is never one hundred percent safe but there have been measures taken to make the internet safer to explore. I cannot honestly say that the internet will ever be safe for teens to explore unsupervised. Even though the internet is not completely safe there can be measures taken to protect children on it and really what are we supposed to do if all children look at inappropriate content on the internet, shut the internet down? Since there can be only subtle measures taken. I think that we should keep parental blocks but not condemn the internet since we really will not change anything.

  2. "Teens and cyber-socializing: Time well spent? | Milestones :: All about kids at Geo Parent .com." Parenting information at GeoParent - a world of ideas, interaction and inspiration for pregnancy and parents with children from newborn to teen. 16 July 2009 http://geoparent.com/milestones/2008/11/24/teens-and-cyber-socializing-time-well-spent/.

This article mostly covers the pros about cyber-socializing. It says that most of what is said about these online relationships is exaggerated, and talking to others online is safer then most parents think. Studies have shown that most teens only talk to people they know in person, and these sites actually teach teens how to manage a public identity, as well as how to create a home page. On a similar note, these sites also allow teens to become more technologically aware, helping them out in future jobs which are so dependant on computers. This relates to other sources because it repeats the same basic idea that has been expressed in them. I believe the information I gathered from this source because it agrees with all of my other sources and it doesn’t pose any new information which isn’t supported.

This article talks about both the pros and cons of cyber socializing, but tended to focus more heavily on the cons. It stated that more hours spent on networking sites usually leads to deprivation of public social skills and even increased depression. It then went on to say that these cyber relationships between teens sometimes lead to sending inappropriate information or images. Since people spend so much time on these sites, many public relationships are often neglected or ignored. This relates to my other sources because it expresses and supports the cons of cyber-socializing. I believe most of what is written here because it agrees with the information I retrieved from other sources. So, I have no reason to doubt that this information is totally false, although some minor details maybe unreliable.

  4. Question: Are teens capable of online dating?

Hypothesis: Due to the inexperience of teens its not good for them to participate in online dating, because teens don't have the street smart skills required at their level.

Source 3: "Cyber Relationships: The Risks and Rewards of Online Dating" Coulson Duerksen, Copyright © 2009 Discovery Communications, LLC. http://health.discovery.com/centers/loverelationships/articles/cyberdating.html

Online dating is good for people that don't feel comfortable meeting new people. It is also an advantage if you work and travel around the world and don't have time to see a partner. When you do meet a possible partner you have to watch out for certain things. Such as if you ask for a picture and he keeps giving you excuses you know something is going on. "Sherrie and Ellen also advise women not to "have sex" online. The Rules girls say, "Delete/Next" to these men." We can't stop teens quickly from online dating, but if we inform on how dangerous it can be, maybe things will change. I completely agree with this article, except when they said to talk on the phone. Why would you give out your cell phone to someone you don't know that well? It would be much better if you video chatted because you get to see what the person looks like and talk to them. And if its someone who is a complete creep you can just block them.

    Source 4:
"Cyberdating" © Wired Kids, Inc Parry Aftab's book The Parent's Guide to Protecting Your Children in Cyberspace http://www.wiredsafety.org/internet101/aromance.html

I learned that teens should not be dating online "cyberdating". You need to be at least 18 years of age. Even if you think you know a person you meet online you should still treat them like a stranger, and don't give out personal information out. This site gives also very good tips on what to do, and how to not get yourself into trouble. "Take your time, use your head and be careful"! Both of the sources said to take your time and not rush into. You many think you know this person head to toe but you are wrong. Again as the first article i don't think you should give out your number until you meet him/her a few times, at a public place!

  5. Question: Why is cyber bullying a problem and how can teens protect themselves from being cyber bullied?

Hypothesis: Cyber bullying is as much of a problem as is bullying at school, teens need a lot of caution about what there sending over the Internet.

Source 3: Health and Human Resources 2008 15, July 2009
    http://www.stopbullyingnow.hrsa.gov/adults/cyber-bullying.aspx
This site has facts about cyber bullying. 18% of kids 6th through 8th grade had been cyber bullied and 11% of kids say they had cyber bullied other people. The problem has been increasing since recent years because the Internet is becoming such a big place. I’m not sure if the percentages are completely accurate because the site said little research has been done but recent studies show… I wonder what the studies are, just surveys? Other than that this site is government based so the info should be mostly accurate.

This site provides 10 tips to protect you from being cyber bullied. The most basic tips are to not make yourself vulnerable online, always make things private and know exactly who you are talking too. This site relates with other sites because it has the same idea of privacy. I agree with the site and all of its tips, they are all great and easy. Also the site explains the consequences of not following them, which really makes the tips more meaningful.

  7. Cyberbullying is a major problem that most poeple don't know about and its repercussions are traumatic.

    Billitteri, Thomas J. "Cyberbullying." The CQ Researcher. 02 May 2008. 15 July 2009 http://library.cqpress.com/cqresearcher/cqresrre2008050200.

This article gives a couple examples of the effects of cyberbullying and how it made a couple of teens commit suicide. Aslo the article talks about some of the statistics. One the one that stood out the most was that a survey concluded about 75% of kids experiece cyberbullying but only one out of ten report it. This relates to my other sources because it gives examples of cyberbullying and it gives statistics about it. I beleive the article because the source that I used is supposidly a reliable source. Also the information sounds reasonable and doesn't sound fake.

Parker-Pope, Tara. "Parents Often Unaware of Cyber-Bullying." The New York Times. 03 Oct. 2008. 15 July 2009 http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/10/03/parents-often-unaware-of-cyber-bullying/.

This article talks more about the statistics and about how common cyberbullying is. The article says that many people don't realize how common cyberbullying is and they only beleive that it is happening to them. Most of the cyberbullying happens on social networking sights. This relates to my other articles because it gives more info on cyberbullying. I think that this is a good source because its from the New York Times and they are a credible newspaper. Also the study the reported on is from UCLA.

  8. Can the internet affect a teenager’s learning?

If the internet can engage its user, then the internet can be beneficial towards a teenager's learning.
"Researchers Find Internet Use Has Pros and Cons for Kids." News. 30 APR 2006. ConsumerAffairs.com Inc. . 16 Jul 2009 http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2006/04/internet_kids.html.
"Children and Internet Use: Social, Psychological and Academic Consequences for Low-income Children." Psychological Science Agenda. 12 OCT 2003. 2009 American Psychological Association. 13 Jul 2009 http://www.apa.org/science/psa/sbjacksonprt.html.
In the HomeNetToo project, used by many, about 140 teenagers of low income were studied to see the effects of internet in a house. The children were allowed an average of 30 minutes of internet daily. The reading test scores and GPAs of those internet students increased. The question then becomes why only reading and not math? The fact can be that internet makes people read and by doing more reading, you can read at a faster pace or increase your vocabulary.
This website is related to the apa website (American Psychological Association) because they base their statements on the same survey. Even though it is the same information resource, the two websites interpreted the information the same. The interpreted information is that the teenagers were using the internet for different purposes but they all help in the improvement of scores.
I find that the information to the survey can be valid. As I searched throughout the internet, I found that almost all of the websites that contained the information of the link between school and the internet were the same. The other information on the website was mostly assumptions that did not really pertain to my topic so it could be possible that the website is a fake. I say this because the only websites that guarantee valid information is websites those end in “.gov.”
"Internet Use Involves Both Pros and Cons for Children and Adolescents." 26 APR 2006. Newswise. 16 Jul 2009 http://www.newswise.com/articles/view/520022/.

Rainie, Lee. "Data Memo." The Internet at School . 02 AUG 2005. Pew Internet & American Life Project. 13 Jul 2009 http://www.pewinternet.org/~/media//Files/Reports/2005/PIP_Internet_and_schools_05.pdf.pdf.

Based on the HomeNetToo survey, the website says that 140 teenage students from low income families were studied and showed that the addition of internet into their lives increased their reading scores and GPAs. This is probably so because the websites and the internet itself are full of reading that can intrigue its user to read or search more. Also there is information pertaining to how the teenagers use the internet to find health information. In developing countries, teenagers can use the internet to see what is in the world.

This website is similar to the pewinternet website because they both give information on how teenagers use the internet. While the pewinternet website has a vast amount of how teenagers use the internet with statistics, the newswise website gives information that pertains mostly to teenagers in developing countries. No matter where in the world you go, teenagers can use the internet to find information for themselves for school or for safety and health factors.

I can say that the information about the HomeNetToo survey is valid. I can make this assumption because as I searched for different sources on the internet, I saw that most of them contained the HomeNetToo survey. When looking at the specifics, the information is the same so; the survey is most likely credible. I feel that the information about the teenagers from developing countries is true because the teenagers can find answers that the elders will not tell them or do not know. With the internet whether or not the information is credible, the teenagers can use their knowledge to decipher what is right and what is not. Also, with more research, the truth will come. Again, websites can never be guaranteed to be valid unless they end with “.gov.”

In this piece of information, it talks about children being seduced by adults on the internet. Most of the time it happens on chatrooms, myspace, and facebook. Teens have a hard time judging who is who on line becase they cannot see who is on the other side of the screen. This relates to other sources because this happens on every social networking sites. I believe that this information is very reliable because it is from the CQ Researcher. This source worked with " the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children", " Crimes Against Children Research Center", and other places.

Musgrove, Mike. "Challenging Assumptions about Online Predators." The Washington Post 25 Jan. 2009, Every Edition ed., Financial sec.

In this article, I understand that the police are having a hard time finding the predators because kids now, are less susceptible of being vulnerable to these online predators. This relates to other sources because this happens on almost every social networking site. Older adults will pretend to be other teenagers in order to get other teen's attentions. I should believe this source because it is from "The Washington Post," a highly respectable newspaper that everyone knows of.

  10. Question: Is the Internet more likely making us smarter or dumber?

Hypothesis: The Internet is most likely increasing our intelligence, but has the ability to worsen our intellectual stimulation.

Aaronovitch, David. August 13 2008. “The Internet shrinks your brain? What rubbish.”http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/david_aaronovitch/article4517674.ece

In this article, David is sharing with us what other articles have been saying about the Internet making us dumber. A common point made by these articles were, the Internet has made us drift away from “deep reading” and substituted it with web reading. With deep reading we were able to, make deep mental connections, engage properly, and assert our own ideas. With the net’s effortless information access, we’ve become “pancake people” said by Nicholas Carr. They also agree that teens hooked on leisure Internet activities have been distracted from better brain stimulation. David believes that the Internet has helped his teenage daughters’ social lives and that the Internet is only a distraction by choice. The other sources I’ve used haven’t included the fact that the Internet is only a distraction if the user chooses it to be. I agree with his reasons, it’s from the Times newspaper, and I have read the articles from where he had retrieved his facts. I consider this source reliable.

Claburn, Thomas. October 15 2008 “Is Google Making Us Smarter?” http://www.informationweek.com/news/internet/search/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=211200721

This article is questioning Nicholas Carr’s article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” A study was taken place at UCLA by their professors in neuroscience. The results show that Internet search engines triggers complicated brain activity, which helps exercise brain function. The tests showed similar brain activity while a study participant read a book, then conducted Internet searches. However, as the participant searched the Internet, a greater extent of neural circuitry was activated. The results suggest that searching the Internet helps improve brain function. This source is unlike every other source I’ve used because it has actually experiments and data to prove its point. The other resources only used logical reasoning and perspectives. I believe this source is reliable because I am certain that a UCLA study was initiated regarding the brain and the Internet.

San Francisco Chronicle talks about the sexual predators online. it says that those who are addictd to the internet tend to post more personal information which leads to danger.

  17. Question: Can eLearning completely replace formal schooling and the classroom environment?

Hypothesis: Due to limitations of technology at the time and the flaws of human nature eLearning can never completely supplant the classroom.

Source 3: Powell. "eLearning Benefits and Challenges." Jul 15, 2009. (Tag Not Allowed).

Summary:This site mainly addressed the pros and cons of eLearning. This site, unlike the majority of the others, also addressed some of the concerns that instructors might have with eLearning.

Synthesis:The site provided some new information or ideas that i had not thought of previously. It pretty much restated the challenges that eLearning provided and warned of a need for self motivation.

Critique:This was created by Dr. Powell a former professor at Louisiana Tech University. She is now the Director of Distance Learning for the College of Social Science and Humanities at Kennesaw State University. I am aware that she may be slightly biased in favor of distance learning due to her position. However I am hoping that as an educator she will attempt to give the most accurate description possible so as to benefit students the most. Meaning that she will not try to persuade students to take part in a distance learning program if eLearning does not suit them.

Source 4: Learning Light. "e-Learning Centre".
    (Tag Not Allowed)

Summary:This site was really helpful in finding a lot of information from different times and perspectives. It showed how eLearning has been viewed from when it first became a controversy to present-day. I think this is actually an archive of different articles about distance learning.

Synthesis:This site was very helpful. It backed up the information I already had as well as providing new insight to the history of distance learning.

Critique: The site and articles seem legitimate since one can easily see where the information is from and who wrote them. It is unbiased and gives good coverage of both sides of the argument.
