Research Synthesis

In the comments below, synthesize a hypothesis to your research question based upon two sources you've read.

Directions:

1.  Write your hypothesis
2.  Identify the relationship between the two sources that support your hypothesis.
3.  Write a bibliography entry for both sources.

Example:

Shortening summer vacation has allowed students to retain more learning.
The article by Dr. Idunno notes that student test scores were substantially higher when summer vacation was shorter.  Another study by John Doe exemplifies this claim in a study of Wisconson students.  Doe found that students actually enjoyed shorter summers because they suffered from less boredom during the last weeks of vacation.

  2. If the proper precautions were taken on the internet then inappropriate content on the internet isn't really a problem.
These articles cover parental controls on the internet and new programs made to ehance internet protection. Parental blocks are the ideal form of internet protection because parents can make sure that their children do not go onto websites that they do not want their children to see. The second article from the New York Times mentions spyware, which is a rather overprotective form of parental controls even called an "invasion of privacy". I think that there should be some sort of protection between parental block and a site where the parent can view everything that their children do on the internet. Id there was some sort of protection that doesn't invade privacy then the issue of dangers on the internet for teens is much less likely.

  3. Cyber-socializing is a great way for teens to communicate and learn.

These articles agree that cyber-socializing is beneficial because it makes teens learn to distinguish their types of speech when talking to either adults or other teens. They also say that these sites are great for teaching teens to be more knowledgeable with computers to become successful in today’s society, which is so dependant on technology. Both these articles also agree that cyber-socializing is helpful in teaching teens to decide for themselves what type of content is acceptable and safe for public view.

  4. Mostly all teens have been bullied some time in their childhood or are still getting bullied. Cyber bullying is a big issue right now since the Internet is such an easy source and millions of people use it. The Stop Cyber Bullying website said that some kids bully others online as a joke or just because they are bored. Eight percent of kids have been cyber bullied, according to the Peter West article.

  5. If people got involved with outdoor activities such as sports, internet addiction wouldnt be a problem and many would live a healthier life.
Both websites about internet addiction agree that it affects you physical health negatively. yet not only does it affect teens, but adults as well. though the computer can benefit us, if its usage is abused, then we are only hurting ourselves.

Creating an internet with less viruses can be
done by users protecting their websites and the government filtering for viruses.

According to Kevin Sinclair, hackers can access many user-created sites and use them to spread viruses. With more secure websites, hackers will have a more difficult time spreading viruses. According to several web executives, the government would have the ability to filter the internet for viruses at a high expense and decreased internet speed. But government filters would be able to block sites that show signs of spreading viruses.

  8. According to the article from ABC news about 20% of people lie who they are online dating sites. Men especially lie about who they are. There was one case when a man lied that he was a spy, doctor. Then he raped and sexually assaulted many women. This man was on the site "match.com". About 66% of people say that online dating sites/relationships are dangerous. How do you ever know who you are talking to online line? You kinda don't, but most teens find themselves trust worthy enough to go meet this "17 year old boy/girl" thinking they are know what they are doing. Starting online dating and a teenage year is very dangerous, because some don't know the dangerous hiding on the computer.

  9. Due to the limitations of technology, E-Learning as it is now cannot replace the classroom experience.

Web Based Training (WBT) is a viable option for many international companies over instructor-led training.E-learning is however not without its weaknesses. WBT places most of the responsibility for learning squarely on the shoulders of the student. Motivated learners do well with online training because it is a stimulating efficient alternative to classroom training, which is often perceived as a waste of time. Unmotivated students either never start or do not finish their online training course. High initial costs, lack of IT infrastructure, lack of adequate computer knowledge in students, little or lack of personal interaction with instructor and other participants are some of the weaknesses of e-learning.

The internet helps to further and help the students learning.

Both of the articles support the assumption that the internet helps children to learn. From apa.org, the surveyed children had an increase in their GPA and reading scores. This statistic shows an instance where the text on the internet can be helpful. From pewinternet.org, there is a survey that shows that out of a group of parents, 80% of all parents of teenagers can say that the internet does affect the way a child learns. A little further in the article, it says that teenagers and parents agree that teens cheat but 37% say that too many teens use the internet to cheat. Whether or not the students cheat, the internet can affect the student’s GPA and possibly the reading score. Math would not be increased because you have to have some prior knowledge.

  11. The Internet is most likely increasing our intelligence, but has the ability to worsen our intellectual stimulation.

As stated in the article, “ Is Social Technology Making Us Smarter?” the Internet provides ways, which help us develop as better thinkers and communicators. It also allows us to observe and analyze other people’s opinions around the world. While being exposed to different cultures and perspectives, we have the ability to voice out our own thoughts. According to an article by Jordan Barber, the information supplied by the Internet is just unbelievable. It is way more convenient than searching for books in big libraries. Both articles state that the Internet is very useful and can help us gain intelligence. But they also agree that the effortless attainability (leading to laziness), false information, and depending on the user’s motives, can lead to a duller mind.

  12. Cyberbullying is a serious offense and is the cause of many hardships for teens. The first article talks about the effects of the cyberbullying and how bad it is. Also the article states that one in ten children will be cyberbullied. This just goes to show how common cyberbullying is. The other article talks about the consequences one person experienced for cyberbullying.

  13. Online socializing is able to help users in many ways, but also takes away social skills and is able to pout them in harm's way.
Both of these articles are chock full of information. Not only do their provide a handful of statistics and figures, they also give evidence from both sides whether its believing or doubting. These sites also contain many real-world examples and events related to cyber socializing.

  14. Study: Internet Socialization Important for Teens

They study online behavior for three years at UC Irvine to learn about teens and their social behaviors online. This study shows that teens do not use the internet for educational studies. But instead they use it to socialize with other people. They develop social skills online by communicating with others.

  15. My hypothesis is that it is better to socialize in person because there are some problems that might occur if you socialize online. Although socializing online will gain you social skills, it is better to be in person and interact with others.

    The Internet and Social relationships

THe fact that you are anonymous online makes people open themselves up to others online. If you socialize online, it is less likely that you will communicate with your faimly, friends, and neighbors in person because you are wrapped up But you form nes relatioships. BUt talking to people in person you get to experience facial expressions and physical attractiveness. It is very controversial.

These two sources are both similar because they both talk about the positives and negatives of cybersocializing
