Question:  How does one attain success?

Quotes:
"At the working man's house Hunger looks in, but dares not enter."
"He that riseth late, must trot all day, and shall scarce overtake his business at night."

Ben Franklin detested laziness and saw industry as the road to prosperity.  According to his maxims in Poor Richard's Almanac, hunger "dares not enter" an industrious man's house--perhaps because the busyness of the working man drives hunger away.  In a similar maxim, Franklin praises the value of rising early and implies that procrastination leads to needless stress and frustration.  The man who rises late he says "must trot all day" and barely gets his work done before evening.

  1. Question: How can one attain true knowledge?

Quotes: “At first, my way with men was to hear their words and give them credit for their conduct. Now my ways to hear there words and look at their conduct. It is from Yu that I have learned to make this change.”

“Yu, shall I teach you what knowledge is? When you know a thing, to hold that you know it; and when you do not know a thing, to allow that you do not know it-that is knowledge.”

Confucius states in the first quote that Yu taught him how to change his outlook on different people. At the end he says, “It is from Yu that I have learned to make this change.” Confucius attained knowledge through another person, but in order to keep that knowledge he used it. That is the same idea with the second quote. True knowledge is meant to be put to work and saved, “…to hold that you know it.” And when you don’t know something you have to be open minded to let people tell you their ideas. So the two quotes tie into each other.

  2. How can one attain true knowledge?

"Avoid dishonest gain: no price can recompense the pangs of vice."

"None but the well-bred Man knows how to confess a fault, or acknowledge himself in an error."

Ben Franklin says in his first quote that to find true knowlegde, one can't afford to cheat in order to become successful, it is not worth the regret or punishment to follow. In his other quote, he says that true knowledge can't be grasped if one isn't able to admit defeat. To lose, is to have learned.

  3. "You can learn from anything but true knowledge is in knowing that you dont know everything"

"Hearing their words and looking at their conduct can help one seek to be worthy to be known"

Confucius says that learning without thought is lost and thought with learning is perilous. and he also says that instead of hearing and giving credit to conduct you must hear as well as LOOk at the conduct. also he says that the best knowledge is one who knows he doesnt know evertthing

  4. Is humankind sinful by nature?
"who can say I have made my heart clear, i am pure from sin?"
"in a multitude of words there [doth not lack] transgression;but he that refraineth his lips is wise."
Both of these quotes from the bible cover talking about your moral integrity. Both emphasize the fact that people are evil and no one can really say otherwise. Because no one can really say that they have never sinned he would be lying and therefore the person who refrained from spreading false testimony would be wise. The quotes tie into eachother because they both involve moral integrity and talking about it.

  6. How can one attain true knowledge?

"He that can compose himself, is wiser than he that composes books" -Ben Franklin

"He that walketh with wisemen shall be wise" -the Bible

these two are both right answers. but they are unlike eachother in their meaning.

"He that can compose himself" means those who can teach themselves. "is wiser than he that composes books" means is smarter than someone that write books. it can also mean is wiser than people that teach others. therefore, those who teach themselves, are smarter than those who learn from other.

"He that walketh with wise men shall be wise."
this means those that learn from others are wise. esspecially when its an old and experienced source.

  7. Question : To what extent does life's qualify benefit from self-interest or ambition?

Quotes: * "Hear Reason, or she'll make you feel her."

    * "He that would like to live in peace and at ease, must not
speak all he knows, nor judge all he sees.

Ben Franklins first quote tells me a message that you should hear the other person first, and be reasonable. "Or she'll make you feel her" probably has something to do with being open minded, because you need to step into her shoes and see what she sees and feel what she feels. The second quote plays almost the same roll. You should not judge people by what you see or know. These two quotes relate because they both have something to do with being open mined and giving people a chance.

Question: How can one attain true knowledge?

Quotes: “My son, forget not my teaching, but let thy heart keep my commandments, for length of days, and years of life.” “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.”

We will learn from our fears, but we must remember those lessons forever to attain true knowledge. In the second quote, it says fear is the beginning of knowledge. Out of fear, we will gain true knowledge. In the first quote, it says do not forget my teachings ever. Even though you can learn something, if you forget it, it doesn’t matter. Combining those quotes, we have to remember our true knowledge for it to stay true knowledge. This is a relationship between the two parts of achieving true knowledge.

  9. Question: How can one attain true knowledge?

Quotes: "The Master said, 'Learning without thought is labor lost; thought without learning is perilous.'" "The Master said,'Yu, shall I teach you what knowledge is?When you know a thing, to hold that you know it; and when you do not know a thing, to allow that you do not know it- that is true knowledge.'"

The first quotation speaks about the nature of thought. The key to true knowledge is individual ideas based off of facts leaned. It is only when one admits that one does not know does one truly begin to learn. It is in the admittance of ignorance that our egos move out of our way and allow us to achieve a higher level of thought.

  10. Question: How can one attain true knowledge?

    Quotes:
“ The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.”
“ The way to see by faith is to shut the eye of Reason.”

The first quote from the Bible is saying that fear, reverence towards the Lord, will lead to the beginning of knowledge. When fear is present in our lives, we tend to experience new emotions and reactions. Being exposed to different aspects of life diminishes our ignorance. The second quote said by Benjamin Franklin, is talking about the way to believe the things unseen is to get rid of having reasoning as our only thinking source. Once we shut “the eye of Reason” then true knowledge is gained. Both quotes are explaining how thinking in different ways, and being exposed to a variety of thoughts, leads to attaining true knowledge.

  11. How can one attain true knowledge?

“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise...”
    “In the multitude of words there [doth not lack] transgression;
But he that refraineth his lips is wise.”

The first quote say that if you hang around and interact with wise people then you will be wise. It can be inferred that wisdom can be rubbed off of people or by some type of transitive law. The second quote say that in lots of words, you may not get anywhere and the silent man is wise. It can be inferred that silence can show wisdom or that the right few words is an indication of wisdom. While one quote says that wisdom can be gained from others, the other, by contrast, says that wisdom can be found in silence or few words. So they differ in the context of the way that wisdom can be found or gained because one requires wise others while the other requires silence to be wise.

  12. How can one attain true knowledge?

"The Master said,'Yu, shall I teach you what knowledge is?When you know a thing, to hold that you know it; and when you do not know a thing, to allow that you do not know it- that is true knowledge.'"

The Master "At 15, I had my mind bent on learning. At 30, I stood firm. At 40, I had no doubts. At 50, I knew the decrees of heavan. At 60, my ear was an obedient organ for the reception of truth. At 70,I could follow what my heart desired without transgressing what was right."

The first quote means to learn something you must admit that you do not know something. The second quote means getting knowlegde takes a long time and you never stop learning. Since you will never know everthing you will always be learning until the day you die.

  13. How can one attain true knwoledge.
The way to see by faith is to shut the eye of Reason.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.

This first quote is stating that in order to live by faith, one must shut out the eye of reason, or try to believe that there is a scientific meaning behind everything that happens.
The second quote is stating that in order to attain knowledge, you must fear God. This means that you have to believe that God is the Almighty and that He is in control.
These quotes in a sense show that being smart isnt the answer to true knowledge, it is faith.
